CoJ Alternative Waste Treatment Technology Project

Estimated Project Cost:ZAR 3,5 Billion
Status:Feasibility Study Completed
Awaiting Council Approval
Expected Delivery Model: Regulated PPP
Sector: Energy

Project Background and Scope

The City of Johannesburg (COJ) is experiencing challenges of waste management particularly on disposal, where the City is fast running out of landfill space. The completed feasibility study has proposed a solution that aims to reduce of waste to landfill, and if possible, alternative energy generation from all waste material generated from the municipal areas.

In order to solve the above the CoJ intends to embark on a project that aims to reduce approximately 500 000 tpa waste-to-landfill, and if possible, alternative energy generation (approximately 25 MW) from municipal solid waste material.
